Mandatory Learning Disability and Autism Training
The Health and Care Act 2022 introduced a legal requirement for CQC-registered health and social care providers to ensure staff receive appropriate training on learning disability and autism.
The Oliver McGowan Code of Practice supports this legal requirement. The code sets clear standards for training, training providers and care services.

Appropriate to Role
Tier 1: Awareness-level
Tier 2: Direct support/care roles
Tier 3: Complex care or leadership roles

Applied to Practice
Training must include real-life case studies, reflective learning, and support to implement learning in their work.

Live, Co-Delivered Training
All training must include sessions co-delivered by someone with a learning disability and an autistic person.
For Tier 2, this means at least one full day of interactive face-to-face training.

Evidence-Based and Quality-Assured
Content must be based on evidence and regularly reviewed. The entire process must involve autistic people and people with learning disabilities.
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) will assess the application of this code of practice as part of its assessments. Non-compliance will lead to enforcement actions.
Some of our accredited training centres offer the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training Framework. This is not affiliated with Advantage Accreditation. We cannot offer accreditation for Oliver McGowan training.
