CPD in the Construction Industry

The construction industry employs over 2.1 million people in a huge range of roles. Employees must ensure their skills and knowledge stay up-to-date, while continuing to meet new demands. For example, there is a new focus on sustainability in construction, which employees need to understand and incorporate into their roles.

The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) requires members to undertake and record CPD activities such as conferences, in-house programmes and academic studies. The Institution of Structural Engineers allows some flexibility. While they recommend 30 CPD hours a year, members can complete 90 hours over a three-year period. 6 of every 30 hours must be focussed on health and safety topics. The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) provides an online portal for members to keep track of CPD activities.

Construction involves a huge range of professional roles, from Town Planners to Chartered Surveyors to Plumbing and Heating Engineers. Many industry bodies require a specific number of CPD hours per year.
